Sighting-Dominance Check PURPOSE To identify the patient’s sighting-dominant eye.
INDICATIONS A sighting-dominance check is performed when a subjective match in the clarity of the two lines of letters is not achieved during the binocular balance, even though the two eyes are correctable to the same VA under monocular conditions.
EQUIPMENT ·No special equipment is needed, although sighting-dominance typically will be performed with the patient looking through the phoropter.
SET-UP ·Have the patient form a triangular “window,”5 cm or 2 in on a side, with his hands.
STEP-BY-SYEP PROCEDURE 1.Instruct the patient to extend his arms fully in front of him, and, with both eyes open, to look at your dominant eye through the window he has made with his hands. 2.Note which eye the patient uses to look at your eye. This is his sighting-dominant eye.Leave this eye with the slightly clearer vision during the binocular balance. 3.Return to step 41 of the binocular balance. |
